First Win - Just missed the first Goat

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Those of you who watched the game know what I mean when I say we just missed giving out the first GOG award of the season. The crew had a comfortable 3 run lead going into the bottom of the 9th when new closer Eric Gagne gave up 3 runs before he could even get an out.

Tony Gwynn Jr had a good game with a couple of hits vs the tough Zambrano, an important bunt, and some nice playing in the OF. I wonder what the Brewers will do if Gwynn continues to play this way throughout the 25 games Mike Cameron is suspended. Personally, I hope he does/can.

Sheets pitched great giving up only one hit in over 6 innings pitched before Nedly gave him the hook due to a high pitch count.

On the other side, import Fukudome looked great with a couple of hits and that homer in the 9th to tie it up. I knew there was a reason why I said the Brewers should sign him. -Then again, Braun and Hart in LF and RF isn’t bad either. Let’s just hope that Fuku isn’t that good all season.

No goat today, but that’s a good thing - especially vs. the Scrubs.

Homepage Moved

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Hello baseball fans. I’ve been a bit busy with paintings and schoolwork so I stepped aside for a few days. I’m back in time for the start of the season and our first goat award. As you may know, the crew starts the season on the road vs the Chicago Scrubs, so here’s hoping our first award (and our first loss) doesn’t come until sometime AFTER this series.

As you may have also noticed, I moved the Brewers’ team page to be that of the Goat of the Game homepage. I have decided that for this season I will handle only the Brewers and branch out to all 30 teams perhaps next year.  This is due to a combination of factors such as not enough free time available to edit 30 pages almost daily, not enough participation, not enough funds, and not enough wordpress knowledge (see previous posts).

You can still sign up for a free blog if you wish to write (about any of the 30 teams). If you do so, there’s a good chance that you can remain the featured blogger for your team come next season. You can even collect votes for GOG awards if you wish and we’ll enter them into the GOGs history page.

I’m excited about the upcoming season and growing this site. Please feel free to use the message boards, the comment section (on the contacts page), or to email me with your thoughts, complaints, T-shirt requests, or anything else.

Thanks for stopping in.

Merchandise

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

I added some custom GOAT T-shirts to the index page today. One of my designs was shot down because apparently there is some law about selling the likeness of a celebrity (I had Ned Yost’s head on a body of a goat).

I wonder how that law affects the celebrity paintings I’ve done with intent to sell? Hmmm… Call the cops.

In any case, I’m open to suggestions on design. If you have any ideas, I can work with you on design and get you a T-shirt (white) for around $15.00. My cut is only about $1.50 on the deal, so I won’t be getting rich quick. I just think it would be cool to have the GoatoftheGame name out there walking around. Check them out on the main page: http://www.goatofthegame.com

Other than that, not much is happening with the site today. I have 2 seperate designers looking into restructuring this blog page. ..But it’s still up in the air.

I need to get the word out and start collecting bloggers here. If you know of anyone who would like to set up a free blog, please spread the word. Thanks!

Stay Tuned - Season Around the Corner

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

The season is barrelling down on us. Goat of the game isn’t as ready as I’d like. We have a few blogs trickling in, but still waiting for the new look for the blogs page. I think help may be on the way.

I don’t have anything funny or witty to say today, I just posted in order to test out a html poll inserted into the blogs. Here goes nothing:

…that didn’t work. ..of course.

anyways..happy happy birthday to me, to me

Roadblocks

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

It’s all getting a bit frustrating. I am still trying to change the template on the blogs page to match the rest, but once again am finding I know too little. I’ve been quoted anywhere between $200 and $1200 for what I need done to the page(s). The offer of FREE has yet to come in. Hmmm….

All the while I am neglecting my college homework, my paintings, and the other website I’m supposed to be creating.

I’m going to list the things I need for the site in the hopes that someone out there can help me out:

1) plug-in for wordpresssmu to allow for new bloggers to choose a category (team they will blog about) when signing up

2) template for blogs page to gel it with the existing pages

3) plug-in or add-on to wordpressmu to pull random blogs and put them on appropriate pages daily. For example, pull a random blog from the Brewers category and post it on the Brewers’ team page as a featured blog.

and that’s it. simple, right? haha

If I do happen to come across $200 then I’ll have to decide between paing a bill or getting my site fixed.

I win, Wordpress Loses

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

WAH HA HA HA

Chalk one up for the good guys.

You know, you’d think that a free program such as Wordpress would offer better support. ..Then again, no you wouldn’t.

My Bad. The trouble is, when you go to the forums for help, if you don’t already know the answer to your own question then you’re an idiot. They’ll tell you flat out. Now, I don’t normally consider myself an idiot, but for the sake of argument, okay.

I struggled with this program for a month. Then I gave up and it worked great. You see, that’s what I wanted Wordpress to think: that I gave up. Wordpress let it’s guard down. Just then I decided to swoop back in. I ignored all the tutorials I’ve watched, all the instructions I’ve read, and all the common sense I have, and I just did something totally stupid. I deleted the files I couldn’t figure out and tried again.

POOF!

It worked.

Instead of a “Sorry, you’re an idiot” message I normally get, I got a ” Congrats!” message.

So the lesson here is: if you can’t figure something out, just give up and it’ll fix itself.

In other news, my lovely wife is going to a casting call tomorrow for the new Johnny Depp movie. Yes, it’s true, they are shooting (at least portions) of the movie here in Oshkosh, WI. My wife will be doing her audition at a local middle school. I’m guessing Mr. Depp will be doing his work in front of a green screen in Hollywood, California. …I just can’t see him in downtown Oshkosh.

I could audition myself, but as it turns out, I’m too tall (they only want men 6′1 and under). Another problem would be my resemblence to Johnny Depp. Placing me in the movie would only confuse the audience into thinking I was his twin brother. ..One day I’m sure he’ll make a movie in which his character has a twin brother. -and THAT is the day I will strike. Afterall, I DID have 2 different people tell me I looked like Johnny Depp - or was it edward scissorhands? -And YES, nearly-blind relatives DO count.

On deck for GoatoftheGame is customizing this blogging program to match the rest of the site. I have called out to geeks everywhere for assistance. We’ll see how that goes. If you care to donate some funds, there is a paypal link at the bottom of most pages at www.goatofthegame.com. I don’t imagine donating to this site is high on anyone’s list of charities, but who knows. -Some funds coming in would allow me to secure only the geekiest of all geeks and really make this site something special.

Oh, I nearly forgot: there has been somewhat of a format change. Now anyone can blog. I will attempt to feature blogs on the team’s pages (one’s I happen to like), but anyone can submit. Please do so now.

..or now.

So Goes the Growth of the Goat

03/05/08 So Goes the Growth of the Goat

At times I’ve felt overwhelmed, as mentioned in my first post, but I’ve come a long way. All I really need now, besides a clue on what I’m doing, is a bunch of willing and witty bloggers. I hear they grow on trees. I just haven’t found the trees yet.I got started by submitting myself to search engines. Well, not MYSELF so much as my SITE. Now I have to wait “several weeks” for them to send some robots out to scan my site. Hmmmm…. What are the chances the robots click on my Wal-Mart ad and make a purchase or two?In any case, I was testing these very search engines to see if I showed up. I typed in “Goat of the Game” (of course) and some Boston Sports site came up.

Now I realize I didn’t yet patent the phrase “Goat of the Game, but I did think it was rather unique. Upon reading this blog, I got to thinking that this person ripped off my idea. Perhaps he was around on the MLB message boards when I brought the subject up last season while looking for potential bloggers.

I‘m not going to show you the page and give him any more traffic, but he lists each of the world series games and decides on the “Man who Negatively Affected His Team the Most (Goat of the Game)”.Call me crazy, but I done thinks dat be a dadgum co-inky-dink.Maybe I can email him and get him to blog about the Red Sox since he’s already proven he can do the job on his own website.

Aside from being ripped off, my other troubles include the mystery of life that is Wordpress.com. Supposedly is supposed to streamline blogging, but I think perhaps they have a different meaning to “streamline” over there. If anyone reading this knows a thing or two about Wordpress then please feel free to clue me in. I’ll forever be in your debt. ..or at least until I forget about paying you back.

Now stop reading this and sign up for a team. Blog already! You know you want to!

The Sufferings of Today’s Website Builders

Friday, March 7th, 2008

02/27/08Boo-Hoo. I’m building a website. Cry myself a river. It may SOUND easy, but it’s not. ..unless you happen to be a computer geek. I guess we’re finding out the hard way that I’m NOT such a creature (despite what you may have heard).

I started out strong, but then I got lost somewhere just after logging in. Wordpress, html, cgi-bins, argh! what the hell is a cgi-bin, and why do I need one? Do I really have enough CGIs to warrant a whole BIN?As you can see, I’m come this far without much help (I’m looking at you, Watertown1978). Of course though, I can’t do this alone. If you haven’t been with us for last years Goat of the Game voting, then you have no idea what’s going on, I’m sure. That pretty much puts us on the same page because I’m lost now too.Let me run over the basics for you quickly and then I need to go shower (website building is dirty work). It all started one summer’s day on a message board not far from here (www.milwaukeebrewers.com)

. Being lovers of the blame-game, a few of us loyal Brewer fans decided to pin each loss on the one player or coach who stunk it up the most. The rules have evolved a bit since then (you can see the official rules here), but the idea is still the same. It’s a way to cope with each loss, and as Brewer fans, we’ve had our share in the past.Due to some childish behavior, I’m not going to name any handles, our threads in which we voted for the Goat of the Game kept getting deleted, making it rather difficult to tally votes and keep proper records. Thus the Official Goat of the Game website was born.Fans from other teams (trolls really) happened by the message board and requested similar services for their teams. You will find links in the horizonatal menu bars on each page here. Unfortunately, as of today, I haven’t signed anyone else up to blog about their team and keep Goat of the Game records. That’s where your help comes in.

If you follow your team religiously and aren’t afraid of ‘going negative’, this may be the pasttime for you. Currently I’m working on a message board, but perhaps this season we’d be better served using the message board on your team’s official page. Lots of traffic there. What we need is a game thread or post-game thread discussion on who the loss should be pinned on based on those rules I’m sure you’ve already read. ahem!

Then you’d have to type out a blog indicating the decision and why that player/coach was selected for such shame. The rest of the blog (as long as you want to make it) would be pretty much up to you. Of course I’d ask that you keep it somewhat family oriented as we all know baseball is a family sport. I may even allow senseless plugs and shameless links now and then! Yippee!

I have an idea of sharing any profit with our bloggers, but I may be jumping the gun on that since all I have now is debt. We’ll have to see how that goes. If the day ever comes when we turn a profit (from ad placement of course), then I’d certainly share it with willing bloggers. Believe it or not, I’ve had a few potential bloggers turn down the idea of money and run off. Maybe they didn’t want the pressure that comes with making money. I dunno.

In any case, as of now, I just need someone who can write reasonably well (I’ll review and edit posts as necessary) and someone who won’t mind being online and posting after EACH of your team’s losses (this will be more work for fans of BAD teams). (you know who you are).If you’re interested, or if you want to share your thoughts, please email me, frogger6. Thank you!

Welcome!

Welcome baseball fans to the goat of the game blogs!
